It’s a new year, and we’ve compiled the top modern decking looks we’re loving for 2022. If stylish outdoor living is one of your resolutions, start your outdoor makeover here.
1. Built-in Beauties

From seating to planters, including built-ins with your design plan helps create a cohesive, low-maintenance outdoor space. Building benches and décor features from the same modern, durable materials as the decking boards makes the most of your space—and gives you everything you need to enjoy your new space on day one.
2. Mix and Match Modern

Combining boards of different hues or widths is another look we love. An assorted layout adds an unexpected variety in a cohesive color palette.
For larger spaces, color blocking is a fun way to create separate sections. An inlaid square or circle in either a different width or color from the rest of the deck adds a stylish, statement-making design element.
If you have a few options you love—and don’t want to choose—it’s nice to know you don’t have to! Use them all in a modern, inviting design.
3. Patterns That Perform

Incorporating a pattern as an inlay or for the full deck design is a fun yet sophisticated design approach. Popular patterns include herringbone, pinstripe, and tile. A herringbone pattern as an inlay for a showcase section dedicated to a fireplace or dining area is one of our favorite looks. Pinstripe and tile patterns work well for a full deck design. And, of course, we can’t forget about a diagonal design. Turning the boards diagonal creates a simple yet elevated look for either a full deck design or for a special inlay.
4. Narrow Width Wonders

Narrow width boards (3.5″) make an energizing, modern design statement. Narrow boards provide more lines that can make a smaller space feel larger. And they’re the go-to board for elegant herringbone and modern pinstripe patterns. We can’t get enough, tbh.
5. Warm Brown, Cool Gray

When it comes to decking, brown and gray are the decking colors standing out to us. You really can’t go wrong! We love brown color palettes for mid-century modern homes; for those wanting to play up a woodland, nature connection; and as a contrast to homes with a cool exterior color, like gray.
Gray is a modern choice for Cape Cod, Craftsman, or coastal style homes. Lighter grays may also absorb less heat and be a great choice for those concerned about sun exposure.
And as always, if you’re drawn to both colors, there’s no need to choose. A high-contrast combination of brown and gray boards can create an unexpectedly modern outdoor space.
6. White Trim—Crisp. Clean. Classic.

We love the look of white trim, like a picture frame, around decking. Crisp white trim is a great way to create contrast in either a bold or subtle way. White trim on exteriors is always in style, so adding it to decking helps complement a home’s exterior and adds a clean finish to any renovation.
7. Stylish Skirting

Adding skirting provides protection from animals, moisture, or mold in a hard-to-monitor spot beneath a deck. Plus, the skirting and fascia are another opportunity to provide a design element. Skirting finishes the deck with a polished touch—whether with complementary or contrasting hues for look that’s all your own. For both their functionality and aesthetic, we love what skirting does for a deck project.
8. Pergola Perfection

It’s not decking exactly, but we can’t stop looking up pergola designs! These deck additions feel both airy and private. Put a dining table under a romantic pergola covered in greenery and lights, and you’ll feel like you’re on a European vacation every night of the week. A pergola is an elegant way to put some extra magic into an outdoor area.
